The classroom is a crucial place for students to develop global awareness and become more culturally competent. The Carolina Asia Center supports educators by providing lesson plans that infuse Asia content into everyday topics. We aim to help teachers adapt their lesson plans and pedagogy to foster acceptance and promote success in an increasingly diverse classroom environment.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2011), more than 40 percent of foreign-born populations in the U.S. are Asian. In North Carolina, the Asian-American population has risen 85 percent since 2000. Orange County alone has become home to a population of approximately 1,000 refugees from Burma (Jurney, 2013). In order to teach this rapidly growing population effectively, educators must recognize these students’ diverse cultural characteristics and learning styles.
These pages offer lists of Asia-themed lesson plans and curriculum, created by and for educators around the world and gathered by the Carolina Asia Center. These resources are appropriate for elementary, middle school and high school students. If you discover any broken links or would like to add your own Asia content to these lists, please email us at cac@unc.edu.
