Course Development Grants for UNC Faculty
The Carolina Asia Center awards course development grants to selected faculty who are interested in adding Asia-related content to existing courses or developing new courses with Asia-related content. Any UNC-Chapel Hill faculty who teaches at least two courses is eligible to apply.
Conference Travel Grants for UNC Faculty
The Carolina Asia Center awards conference travel grants to selected UNC faculty. Up to $1,000 is provided to successful applicants to present a paper on an Asia-related research topic at a conference. The grant can be used to supplement conference/research travel grants from the College or School where the faculty member has her/his appointment. Faculty in all schools and departments across campus are eligible to apply. This grant is supported with the Title VI grant from the Department of Education.
The Rajkumar Faculty Fellowships
The Rajkumar Faculty Fellowships will fund travel to Singapore for selected UNC-Chapel Hill faculty. This fund can be used to conduct faculty research, form institutional partnerships or attend a conference in Singapore. Competition for the awards is open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Carolina Asia Center will award up to two fellowships, each worth up to $5,000.
Southeast Asia Grants from the project “Bringing Southeast Asia Home”
The Carolina Asia Center is proud to hold a grant for “Bringing Southeast Asia Home,” funded by the Henry Luce Foundation Initiative on Southeast Asia. This project provides a number of funding opportunities for faculty (both from UNC-Chapel Hill and beyond).
Modern Indian Studies Faculty Research Award
The MIS Faculty Research Award is intended to further research on contemporary India, broadly conceived. The award is open to tenure track and fixed term faculty of any rank that have completed at least one year at UNC. Applicants may request up to $3,000 per award. MIS encourages applications on diverse topics and fields (ranging from science to business to the social sciences, education, health and the humanities) and especially invites creative ideas and research projects. The funds can be used to support research travel and living expenses; they can be used to access images and rare library manuscripts to support applied research, to conduct community engaged work or to support publication subvention.
Language Course Development Grants
To strengthen Asian language instruction at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Carolina Asia Center awards selected Asian Studies faculty with pedagogy training, professional development and course development grants. We offer grants of a maximum of $1,000 each for pedagogy training or professional development of language faculty and/or course development and enrichment. To be eligible for funding, the faculty must be teaching an Asian language spoken in East, South or Southeast Asia that is taught at UNC such as Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese, Korean, Persian or Arabic.
Speakers from Asia for UNC Classrooms
In order to provide students direct engagement with Asia as part of the standard curriculum in Chapel Hill, the Carolina Asia Center is happy to support speakers from Asia to join UNC classes virtually. Any instructor of record can apply for up to two speakers in Asia to receive an honorarium for speaking to their class.

Language Instructor Professional Development Travel AwardThe Carolina Asia Center awards faculty who seek to develop Asian language pedagogy and instruction. These grants may be applied to either domestic or international travel and/or programs.
Event Co-Sponsorship
The Carolina Asia Center offers up to $300 in funding to invite visiting speakers to classes, film festivals, arts performances and other public events that augment the intellectual life of the University and promote understanding of East, South and Southeast Asian regions. To apply for academic enrichment funding, you can submit a proposal to the Center at any time. Each proposal should thoroughly describe the proposed activity, its contribution to the above goals, its total budget and any other funding it has received. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
