Ramlila: The Story of Ram in Indian Devotional Theater

October 21, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Ramlila is ritual theater, the dramatic enactment of  the earthly life of the Hindu god Ram in an annual fall festival celebrated throughout much of North India and  the Indian diaspora. Ramlila recounts Lord Ram’s travels  on earth, from his birth, marriage, and exile, to his war  with the demon-king Ravan and triumphant return  to Ayodhya.

The literary basis for Ramlila is the Ramayana, one of  two major Hindu epics that date to India’s classical  period. Additionally, the poet-saint Tulsidas’s  sixteenth-century version of the Ramayana, the Ramcharitmanas, and other recent retellings of  the Ramayana serve as inspiration for Ramlila.

This exhibition will introduce the University community  to Ramlila through photographs, videos, and material  items, including costumes, makeup, backdrops, and props. Join us for the opening reception on October 21.
