RAKUGO: Comical Tales from Japan

Join nationally-acclaimed storyteller Motoko for an evening filled with humor, charm, and elegance. A native of Osaka, Japan, Motoko shares hilarious and poignant tales from Rakugo, a storytelling tradition that originated in the 17th century. Motoko is the recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s 2017 Circle of Excellence Award, and is frequently featured in storytelling festivals across the U.S. She is the author of A Year in Japan: Folktales, Songs and Art for the Classroom.

Motoko will be holding a Rakugo performance in English, as well as a workshop near the end. Admission is free – everyone is welcome to join!

大阪出身の落語家ドゥオーキンもとこ様のパフォーマンスをお楽しみいただき、一緒にワークショップをします。

もとこさんについて

大阪府堺市出身。国際基督教大学卒。パントマイムを清水きよし氏、Tony Montanaro 氏に、ス トーリーテリングを Elizabeth Ellis 氏に師事する。マサチューセッツ州立大学アジア言語学部日本語科講師をへて、１９９３年よりストーリーテラーとして全米各地の小中高、大学、図書館、美術館をまわり、日本や中国の民話、落語や小噺、 自らの在米体験にもとづいたオリジナルの作品などを語っている。テネシー州で毎秋おこなわれる全米フェステイバルをはじめ、アメリカ各地のフェスティバルに出演し、数少ないアジア系の語り手の一人として活躍中である。２０１７年、全米組織である National Storytelling Network により「長年にわたってストーリーテリングに貢献し、その芸術的価値を高めた者に与えられる」The Circle of Excellence Award を受賞した。
