Chinese Material Culture and Nature Studies: Martina Siebert

October 25, 2016 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

This talk explores the genre of specialized monographs on material culture and nature studies called pulu (“Treatises and Lists”) from the perspective of knowledge classification and management. These texts exemplify the engagement of Chinese scholars from the 10th to 19th century with specialized knowledge on man-made and natural things such as bronze objects, flowers or goldfish. Pushing the borders of the standard fields of erudition beyond strictly Confucian concerns, they also provide us with an excellent basis on which to examine what constituted an “information package,” complete and ready for re-use, about nature and material culture in late imperial China.

This talk will be hosted at Wake Forest University.
