Islam in the Other African Diaspora: Black Muslims in Asia

September 30, 2015 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Edward Curtis, Millennium Chair of the Liberal Arts and Professor of Religious Studies, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

How do African-descended Muslims practice Islam in South Asia and the Middle East? Nearly all studies of Black Muslims focus on the United States and many Americans still associate the term “Black Muslim” with the Nation of Islam. This talk will challenge that myopic view, reflecting on the meaning not only of Islam but also race and Black identity though a West and South Asian lens.
