December 3, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Grad Professional Development Twitter-01

In a time when traditional networking and professional development at disciplinary conferences is disrupted, this event provides an opportunity for early career scholars to hear from two editors of leading academic journals in Asian studies about tips for a successful submission, trends in academic publishing, and ideas about where their fields are going.

Prof. Tani Barlow (Rice University) is the founding editor for positions : asia critique, published by Duke University Press, and continues there as the senior academic editor. This journal is a leading post-modernist outlet for Asian humanities. Prof. Barlow is an expert in Chinese history, gender studies, and social sciences.

Prof. Kevin Hewison (emeritus from UNC-Chapel Hill, currently adjunct professor at University of Macau) is the long-time editor of the Journal of Contemporary Asia, a leading social science journal celebrating 50 years of publication in 2020. Prof. Hewison specializes in Thailand’s political economy and on labor questions across Asia.

The session will be moderated by Prof. I. Jonathan Kief, of the UNC Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
