DEADLINE: Public Intellectuals Program

November 20, 2016

Public Intellectuals Program, 2016-2018
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The National Committee on United States-China Relations is pleased to announce the fifth round of its Public Intellectuals Program (PIP). This ambitious two-year program, generously funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, is designed to identify outstanding members of the next generation of American China scholars, enrich their understanding of policy-making processes in both the United States and China, help them establish useful relationships with their academic colleagues and with policy practitioners, and nurture their ability to engage in public policy debates on a national, regional, and local level. PIP is implemented through a series of interlocking programs, including seminars in Washington and San Francisco, a study tour of China, participation in National Committee delegations as scholar escorts, and support for public education initiatives.
We are looking for China specialists – in the academic, professional or policy making spheres – who have the interest and potential to play significant roles as public intellectuals. Twenty young American China scholars who, in the tradition of earlier China hands wish to venture outside of academia or their profession into areas relevant to foreign policy and public education, will be selected for the program.

The program is an enrichment opportunity intended to complement Fellows’ primary academic or professional positions; stipends are not provided, but all program related expenses will be covered. The program offers unique opportunities for professional development, mentoring by senior scholars, networking and exposure. Fellows will gain access to senior policymakers and experts in both the United States and China, and to individuals and fields they would not typically be exposed to, such as the business, arts, health, and civil society sectors in China, as well as to the media in both countries. Fellows will also have access to a media coach to help edit and place op-eds, and develop a social media presence. They will also become part of a community of PIP Fellows who communicate via our email listserv and ad-hoc functions.

Eligibility: Ph.D. academics in all disciplines; a limited number of slots are available for established professionals and policy makers. Must have demonstrated expertise on China, several years of experience teaching or in a professional field, and U.S. citizenship or permanent residence. Preference given to candidates between 30 to 45 years old, and to those living in the United States or Greater China.

Timeframe: Two years, from December 2016 to fall 2018.
Commitments: During the program period, Fellows will be expected to commit to the following:
• Attend two four or five-day Washington, D.C.-based workshops (early 2017 and late summer/early fall 2018);
• Attend one two and a half-day San Francisco-based workshop (fall 2017);
• Participate in one ten to twelve-day Fellows trip to China (summer 2017 or summer 2018);
• Develop at least one local public education program with up to $2,000 funding from PIP; and
• Possibly serve as a scholar-escort for a National Committee delegation (one to two weeks in China or the United States).

To apply, and for information on the first four rounds of PIP, including lists of past participants, please go to http://www.ncuscr.org/pip.

Applicants must complete an online application, which includes an essay of no more than 750 words stating how they would benefit from the program, a CV, and the names of three references (one outside of academia or your profession). If you don’t already have an account on the NCUSCR website, you will be asked to create one in order to access the application. Semi-finalists will be contacted in late November to arrange telephone interviews at a mutually convenient time. Notification will be in December. For questions, write: pipapplication@ncuscr.org or call 212-645-9677, ext 36.
Application deadline: November 20, 2016
