Critical Language Scholarship Information Session

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 14 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. Undergraduate and graduate students of diverse disciplines and majors are eligible to apply.
Several Asian languages are available for study, but requiring different levels of prior experience:
No previous study required:
- Bangla
- Hindi
- Indonesian
- Punjabi
- Urdu
One year of study required:
- Korean
Two years of study required:
- Chinese
- Japanese
The CLS info session will be led by Caitlyn Carpio (CLS Program Officer and UNC alumna) and Adi Džumhur (CLS Campus Advisor). Participants will also hear from other Tar Heels who completed the Arabic and Chinese CLS programs. In addition, a representative from the UNC Writing Center will discuss their resources to support CLS applicants.
