UNC is proud to offer Vietnamese language courses through the 203 level in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. Students wishing to learn a Southeast Asian language other than Vietnamese can do so in a variety of ways.

These languages are offered synchronously online. Every university has a different enrollment process and cost, and offerings vary from year to year. Summer language learning

The Southeast Asian Summer Studies Institute (SEASSI) is arguably the best way to learn a Southeast Asian language in a US-based classroom during the summer. Located in Madison, Wisconsin, languages offered include Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Language tables

The UNC Indonesian Language Table (Meja Bahasa Indonesia) meets regularly during the academic year. The meeting is informal, free, and does not provide course credit. All levels are welcome. Please contact Dr. Kevin Fogg for more details.

SEALC and GETSEA have partnered together to offer weekly, online language tables, available free to any university student wishing to practice their language skills. Different languages are offered in different years. Please refer to the GETSEA website for more information.
 

Funding resources for language learning

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
UNC provides FLAS funding for Vietnamese during the academic year and summer and for all other Southeast Asian languages during the summer only. Applications are due in February.

SEALC-GETSEA Language Tuition Support
Support is available for any Southeast Asian language. Applications are due in July.

Critical Language Scholarship
Indonesian is the only Southeast Asian language supported by CLS.

Boren Awards
Awards are available for Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Malay, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.
