Becky Butler is the Assistant Director for Southeast Asia Initiatives at the Carolina Asia Center. She supports the study of Southeast Asia at UNC by writing grants, coordinating Southeast Asia events, making connections among folks with an interest in the region, and facilitating opportunities for UNC’s Southeast Asian and Southeast Asian American students. In particular, Dr. Butler is supporting the CAC’s current grant, “Bringing Southeast Asia Home,” and working with our Vietnamese language program.

Dr. Butler is trained as a theoretical linguist, with a focus on the phonetics and phonology of mainland Southeast Asian languages. More recently, her research has focused on facilitating oral histories among North Carolina’s Southeast Asian diaspora communities. She holds degrees from Cornell University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Virginia.

Outside of her academic pursuits, she enjoys planting flowers and listening to Dolly Parton.
