The deadline for Summer 2017 and Academic Year 2017-2018 Faculty Research Travel Awards and Asian Studies Conference Travel Awards is February 13, 2017.

Faculty Research Travel Awards

Funding faculty travel to East, South and Southeast Asia is essential for expanding Asia-related research and course offerings across UNC-Chapel Hill’s curriculum. To that end, the Jimmy and Judy Cox Asia Initiative Faculty Research Travel Awards fund travel to Asia for selected UNC-Chapel Hill faculty.

These awards provide current Asia scholars with opportunities to enhance their research and pedagogy and make their courses current and relevant for students. The awards also provide opportunities for faculty who are not currently Asian studies specialists with an opportunity to expand their teaching and research to include Asian themes. Competition for the awards will be open to all College of Arts & Sciences tenured and tenure-track faculty and full-time lecturers.

To apply, please submit a two-page project description, your curriculum vitae and a proposed budget to Thupten Norbu, Interim Director of the Carolina Asia Center, at norbu@email.unc.edu. The project description must outline a travel plan and detail how it will impact Asia-related courses and activities at UNC.

Up to five recipients are selected based on academic merit each year and awarded a maximum of $8,000 each. Upon completion of travel, awardees are required to submit a brief description of how the funding enabled them to carry out their research, enhance their teaching and/or publish materials.

Asian Studies Conference Travel Awards

For scholars working on East, South and Southeast Asia, opportunities for presenting research to peers in Asia are limited by the cost of travel. To open up these opportunities, the Jimmy and Judy Cox Asia Initiative Asian Studies Conference Travel Awards fund faculty travel to present their research at Asia-related academic conferences around the world.

Up to four recipients are selected each year and awarded a maximum of $1,500 each. Upon completion of the conference travel, awardees are required to submit a brief description of how the funding helped them share research with peers in other institutions, form Asia-related collaborations and partnerships and promote international exchange.
