Asian Film Series: Salata Baladi

March 28, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Mary, a grandmother, and her daughter (the filmmaker) join efforts to give Mary’s grandson Nabeel a glimpse into the family’s 100-year history of mixed marriages between Muslims, Christians, and Jews.  In solidarity with the Palestinian people, Mary has been boycotting her Egyptian Jewish family in Israel for 55 years. But now she and her husband take a journey to Israel and engage in the breaking of arguably one of the strictest taboos in modern Egypt.

Filmed in Arabic, Hebrew and other languages & shown with English subtitles. Set in Egypt, Israel, and Italy. Directed by Nadia Kamel, 2007. 105 min.

Reception at 6:00 p.m., screening at 6:30 p.m. Contact Yaron Shemer at yshemer@email.unc.edu for more details.
